The Best Fitness Advice Women Can Receive

As I have transformed my own life by losing 60 pounds and managing to keep that weight off for almost 4 years now, I am often asked how I did it. Many of those asking the question and searching for advice are women, typically in their 30’s or 40’s who are struggling with their weight and wanting to lose anywhere from 10 pounds or more.

And as I have spoken with them, there are many pieces of advice I have tried to administer, but it seems that based upon all the talks that I have the advice I have given has come to two basic points.

First, START EATING BREAKFAST! Women are typically so busy and pressed for time getting to work and getting the kids on the bus that they either do not have take time for themselves and eat breakfast or they try to pretend that they morning coffee or a muffin is breakfast.

But it’s not. The single most common factor among those who are obese is that they skip breakfast 1. You must eat a protein-and-fiber based breakfast that will allow you to maintain muscle while at the same time keep you feeling full so you don’t eat as much during the day.

I am going to give you one easy recipe idea. It will take about 3 minutes to make and therefore is ideal for busy women trying to get themselves and their kids where they need to be in the morning.

Get a package of Quaker Oats Weight Control Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal. Add a tablespoon of all-natural peanut butter (make sure it doesn’t contain any ‘partially hydrogenated vegetable oil) and 2/3 of a cup of water. Microwave and then add one handful of almonds and one handful of blueberries.

You end up with a powerhouse of a breakfast. It will provide you with…

  • Good protein so you can maintain muscle.

  • Good carbohydrates to give you the energy to get through the day.

  • Good fats for heart and artery health.

  • Good amounts of fiber to keep your stomach feeling full so that you don’t eat as much throughout the day, and…

  • Good levels of antioxidants to keep you healthy at the cellular level.

And it takes about 3 minutes to make…perfect for busy mom’s.

The other bit of advice I always seem to be giving to women is to START STRENGTH TRAINING. The women that I have spoken with have a major problem with this. They have a vision of having to go to a gym and lift heavy weights…and just want to do aerobic exercises and lose the weight.

It’s not going to happen. That is because for you to effectively lose weight, and keep it off, you must start burning more calories BETWEEN your workouts. And the only way to do this is to turn your body into a more effective fat burning machine. The way to do this is speeding up your metabolism…and the fastest way to do that is to add muscle to your frame.

Now, I am not asking you to lift heavy weights and go to the gym next to the ‘lunks’ who are veins bulging from their ears. What I am asking you to do is 20-30 minutes a day, 2-3 days a week, of resistance band exercises that you can do from home…no gym required…that will allow you to put that muscle on in the privacy of your own home so you can speed up your metabolism and keep the fat off!
